Asher the Morab horse

Anything Goes February 27, 2025

Here we are at the end of another month and I thought I'd share the story of our first horse.

Asher was a Morab, an Arabian/Morgan cross that is a recognized breed. He was quirky, intelligent, food motivated, and the heart and soul of our farm while he lived. He was green when we got him, which means he'd barely been ridden. Not a good choice for two older people, but we couldn't resist him. He wasn't in a good situation and once seen, we couldn't unsee him. So we bought him and brought him home.

He taught us more than we ever taught him. He taught me how important the quality of the food we put into our bodies is. He came to us with skin issues, but once I cleaned up his diet, they went away. That got me looking at my own issues. Turned out I was gluten intolerant. Once I eliminated gluten from my diet the arthritic joint issues I was experiencing disappeared.

Asher loved to play and learn new things. I set up a complicated maze with ground poles and would back him through it. One day I had him in the yard on a lead line, just relaxing, hanging out, and letting him graze. He set himself up at the maze and backed through it without my asking. The look on his face was priceless. He was so freaking proud of himself!

Asher went through several pasture mates during the years we had him. He could be a bit of a butthead with other geldings, but he got along great with my Appaloosa mare. The morning we found him in the paddock nearly bled out from a ruptured intestine broke our hearts. We lost an irreplaceable special someone that day.
