“There are two paths in life: Should and Must. We arrive at this crossroads over and over again. And every day, we get to choose…When we choose Should, we’re choosing to live our life for someone or something other than ourselves. The journey to Should can be smooth, the rewards can seem clear, and the options are often plentiful…
“Must is different, Must is who we are, what we believe, and what we do when we are alone with our truest, most authentic self. It’s that which calls to us most deeply…Unlike Should, Must doesn’t accept compromises.”
From Elle Luna’s book, The Crossroads of Should and Must
There are many reasons to follow the path of Shoulds, most of which involve some kind of pressure – peer pressure, societal pressure, family pressure. We've all succumbed at one time or another, or even lived our entire lives based on doing what we believe we should.
The path of Shoulds has rarely worked out for me. No, that's not right. Let's be honest here. The path of Shoulds has never worked out for me. And whenever someone has unloaded their unhappiness on me, their problem always boils down to the fact that they chose what they felt they should and not what they wanted.
Think carefully my friends when making a decision based on Should. What we should do is often in opposition to what we want to do, but choosing what we want is the truest path to living an authentic life.
